London, UK July 29, 2019 – MarketsandMarkets recently interviewed Gavin Reynolds, Professor Emeritus, Queen’s University Belfast, UK regarding the 4th Annual MarketsandMarkets Epigenetics Congress, taking place on 3-4 October 2019 at Radisson Blu Edwardian, Grafton, London, UK.
Gavin Reynolds is Honorary Professor at Sheffield Hallam University and Professor Emeritus, previously Chair of Neuroscience, at Queen’s University Belfast. His main research interests lie in two directions: the neurotransmitter pathology of schizophrenia, and the mechanisms underlying the beneficial and adverse effects of antipsychotics and other psychoactive drugs, with a recent focus on pharmacogenetic and epigenetic influences. He has over 300 research publications, including papers in Nature and The Lancet.
Q. What are the recent developments and technological advancements?
A. As I am only using one aspect of epigenetics as a tool in our research, I cannot answer either of these questions with any expertise. My impression is that genome-wide methylome analysis is becoming popular, although suffering from the same problems as GWAS genetics.
Q. What are the key take away points from your presentation?
A. Changes in DNA methylation may have similar functional consequences to SNPs in terms of gene expression and its psychiatric and therapeutic consequences. However rather than being unmodifiable inherited factors, they may be acquired and modifiable, perhaps explaining some aspects of gene x environment interactions that are so important in psychiatry and neuroscience.

A. Epigenetics in the past appears to have served, and been driven by, cancer research. We are now seeing its role in other areas of medicine including diabetes, inflammation and my own area of psychiatry. Thus all those in biological research addressing clinical problems may have something to gain by such a programme
